The Narrows Bridge into Gig Harbor

Crossing the Tacoma Narrows westbound is the drive. The bridge opens up, the water drops away underneath you, and Gig Harbor on the far side is a working marina town that has not been ruined yet. Park by the water, eat something, come back at dusk.
The thing nobody tells you: the Narrows toll only applies in one direction. You cross into Gig Harbor free, and you pay on the way back to Tacoma — $4.50 with a Good To Go pass, $5.50 at the booth, $6.50 if it gets billed by mail. Budget the six bucks and forget about it. Chambers Bay

Chambers Bay hosted the 2015 U.S. Open, which Jordan Spieth won, and the 2010 U.S. Amateur before that. It is owned by Pierce County and open to the public, which still surprises people who assume a major championship venue must be private.
Even if you are not playing, the three-mile loop trail and the views over the water make it one of the better places in the South Sound to leave a car parked and take photographs of it.
Ruston Way and Point Defiance

Two miles of paved waterfront running from Old Town out toward Point Defiance Park, with Commencement Bay on one side and a row of restaurants on the other. Duke’s, Katie Downs, The Lobster Shop and Harbor Lights are all on that stretch.
Point Ruston at the far end has become the place people actually go on a warm evening. Point Defiance itself is 702 acres and holds the only combined zoo and aquarium in the Pacific Northwest.

Watch Your Mileage on the GT3
Our 911 GT3 includes 100 miles a day, and the GT3 RS, GT4 RS, Targa and McLaren include 150. A Gig Harbor run plus a lap of Ruston Way will eat into that faster than you expect. The Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS at $895 a day. The roof mechanism is theater on its own and the shape photographs better than anything else we own. Summer weekends book out early, so reach out well ahead of the date.
A birthday or a first exotic
The 911 Carrera at $495 with 200 miles. It is the most complete car we rent and the easiest to enjoy for a whole day. Almost nobody regrets starting here.
Roof down on a warm evening
The Lamborghini Huracán EVO Spyder at $1,295. Naturally aspirated V10, roof down along Ruston Way, and every phone on the waterfront comes out. It is also far easier to drive than people expect.
The one with the doors
The McLaren 600LT Spider at $895 with 150 miles. Dihedral doors, a titanium exhaust that exits behind your head, and as far as we know the only 600LT you can rent in Washington. Book it when the arrival is the point.
You just want to drive something serious
The 718 Cayman GT4 at $595 with 200 miles. Mid-engine, naturally aspirated, and the best-balanced car in the fleet. Take it over the Narrows and back and you will understand why people keep booking it.

Novice clinics start at $1,895 in the GT4 and run to $2,795 in the GT4 RS, with classroom time, an instructor in the right seat and real lapping. Experienced drivers can book arrive-and-drive lapping from $1,195 an hour.

When to Book an Exotic Car Rental in Tacoma
Two patterns worth knowing, because they decide whether you get the car you actually wanted.
Summer weekends go first, and they go early. Between wedding season, graduations and the first warm days, Saturdays in June through August book out weeks ahead. The Targa and the Huracán are the two that disappear soonest. If you have a date, call before you have a plan.
Weekdays are wide open and nobody uses them. A Tuesday in the GT4 costs the same as a Saturday, the roads out toward Gig Harbor are empty, and you will not spend half the rental in traffic. If your schedule is flexible at all, this is the better booking and almost nobody takes it.
Weather is less of a factor than people assume. Every car we rent handles Pacific Northwest rain fine, and the Cayenne and the all-wheel-drive Targa are unbothered by it. A gray forecast is not a reason to cancel.
